Exhibit at Riverside Gallery

Can’t believe January was the last time I posted here.  I have a bit of catching up to do.  I’ve been teaching a figurative clay sculpting class with my first sculpting instructor Jane Bunge Noffke I continue to learn from Jane’s passion and ability to capture human emotion in clay.

My other big news is a group exhibit I have opening this weekend. I’ll have 10 pieces on display along with 8 other artists. Included in this body of work is the finished assemblage using the head I documented progress on here.

I’ll follow up with more thoughts next week.

Progress working in clay

This is the continuing saga of the evolving head.  The photos posted here take the clay head from detail refinement in wet clay to bisque firing at cone 04.  It’s still just a head with no context. I’m at the place in the process where I need to let the piece develop a vocabulary.  Much like the approach used to create a two dimensional collage, this piece will become part of a mixed media assemblage.  My next post will include the steps along intuitive path to completion.

Sculpting in the New Year

I’ve decided to try and photographically document my progress on sculpting a stylized clay head.  It’s not as easy as I thought.  Each time I stop to snap a photo I stop the flow of my creative process.  Keeping clay off the camera also slows things down a bit.

The photos have provided me with the added benefit of being able to step away from the work and try to view it more objectively.  I’m anxious to see how this all influences the end product.

I welcome feedback from anyone viewing.  This is truly a work in progress.  Kind of scary to show something I haven’t completed.  Sort of like having someone  watching you get dressed in the morning.
